Jesus has compassion on lost people, do we? February 7, 2010

I am so happy today to have listened to preaching about the compassionate heart of Jesus Christ for lost people.  My Pastor spoke about what has been for a long time now my favourite text in scripture.  I find in them some of the most beautiful, joyful, sorrowful, and heart wrenching words I have ever heard.

Matthew 9:36-38 “When he (Jesus) saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless like sheep without a shepherd.  The he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.’”

When Jesus saw the crowds, it is not as if he just looked out and observed that there were crowds of people.  He is the Son of God, and he knows all flesh, even our thoughts.  When he saw them, it is to say that he perceived their spiritual state- that they were dead, that they were blind, and that they were lost!  He saw that they were walking around aimlessly; ready to follow whoever would make a claim to know something about God, something about truth.  He knew all about the religious leaders who claimed to know the way to God, but were truly nothing more than hypocrites,  and extortionist who saw ‘godliness’ as a means of financial and personal gain.  He saw how they “tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger (Matthew 23:4)” and how they “shut the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces (Matthew 23:13).  Oh how deeply the Lord was grieved at seeing their terrible state! What Is So Valuable That Christ Would Die? January 11, 2010

What is God’s highest aim in man’s redemption?

So then we have considered in part what is wonderful, lovable, and glorious about the cross from our human perspective.  We have reflected on Christ’s awe striking humility, His willingness to save a God hating people like us, and the accomplishment of saving our souls and changing our hearts.  But there is something even deeper going on than just the act of making an unrighteous heart, righteous.  There is more to rejoice about than even that Christ has spared our soul’s eternal Hell and has prepared for us an eternal home in Heaven.  Though immensely significant, the ultimate gift that God has given us is not just the forgiveness of our sins and the future hope of life in heaven, but that He has done everything to make it possible for us to behold and have Him in His glory.

1.  His aim:  Glory, Exaltation, Praise, and the magnification of His Name.

To start let’s put us, not out of the picture, but somewhere off dimly in a corner of the picture, with God gloriously filling up the center with all brilliance and splendour.

I want to clearly state, that in no way do I want to understate the purpose of Christ’s dying for us, so that we may have eternal life and forgiveness; nor do I want to underemphasize the value that Jesus Christ places on a single lost soul.  These are topics that we will revisit again and again to understand God’s heart for lost people.  But what I want to try and express, is that we are not the focus point of God’s purposes and plans.  We are not the center of Christ’s dying for us, but rather God’s plan of redemption and the execution of it, at the foundation of its’ goal is that Jesus Christ Himself would be displayed in “the radiance of the glory of God (Hebrews 1:3).”  God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit alone are exalted and displayed in the redemption of man.

The heart of God glories in receiving the Glory that is due to His name.  His ways exalt Himself as supreme over all the earth and everything that has been made and been done throughout all history.  God must love Himself, in all the beauty and fullness of the Trinity, and He must love and put Himself first above all things.  I have heard it explained that if God, who sees all of the perfection and majesty that belongs to Him alone, were to love another more than His self, He would be an idolater.  So it must be that even in Christ’s coming in the likeness of man, yes even in His humbling himself to death on a cross, the furtherance of His glory and exaltation of His name would be in view.

Philippians 2:6-10 “Though he was in the form of God, (he) did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.  And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.  Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Look also at these verses, which are only a sample of several of like them, and note God’s purpose for executing His plans, or even from withholding His wrath.

Isaiah 48:9-11 “For the sake of My name I delay my wrath, and for My praise I restrain it for you, in order not to cut you off.  Behold I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.  For My own sake, for My own sake, I will act; For how can My name be profaned?  And My glory I will not give to another.”

I think it extremely important to show you that God has not changed in the New Testament.  He has not gone from becoming a God-centered God to a man-centered God.  His purposes are still being perfectly carried out primarily for His sake, His Honour, and His praise, yes even in and especially in the salvation of sinners.

Matthew 10:22 “You will be hated by all for my name’s sake.”

Matthew 16:25 “…Whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”

Ephesians 1:11-12 “In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory.

Our Lord wants us to delight and be satisfied in Him, and when we are made able by Him to glory in this way, as we are chiefly created to do, God has great pleasure in what He has accomplished in us.

(This is only point one of the chapter entitled “What Is So Valuable That Christ Would Die?”  I will post the other points as I write them.  This is again, a portion from the book I’m working on called “The Complex Nature of God’s Hear For Lost People.”")

Might We Be True Worshipers of God January 1, 2010

John 4:23-24 “But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.  God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”

John Piper: “True worship comes from people who are deeply emotional and who love deep and sound doctrine.”  (see whole quote at end)

My Response-

My heart;

Arise!

For Jesus calls,

And yearns for me with jealous love

Grow not weary nor wax dull

All creation tells of his glory above. (more…)

There are times when the Lord seems to poke and prod at the things we believe to be true.  He is able to bring all to the surface to test and see whether or not we truly do believe it, yes more so whether or not we apply it, and even beyond this:  do we love it?  Does the certain truth of God’s Word strengthen our faith?  Or is it a part of His word that we hold at bay, not truly examining it and seeking in it what precious truths there might be for us?  God, I have found, is so gracious to bring to our attention our wrong thinking about Him, about others, and about ourselves.  Because He loves us, it is His good pleasure to sanctify us by His word as stated in Christ’s own prayer “Sanctify them in your truth; your word is truth (John 17:17).”  For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son (Romans 8:29).” (more…)

To Reconcile Our Differences December 8, 2009

This is another addition to my introduction for “The Complex Nature Of God’s Heart For Lost People.”  I felt that I should be more upfront about what I intend to learn more about and expound upon.  Please understand that this piece is not intended to explain or go into depth about the doctrine.  It is what it is- an introduction and basis upon which to build the things that I will write later.

Racism and Abortion: Is There Common Ground? November 26, 2009

Psalm 82:3-4 “Give justice to the weak and the fatherless;

Maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute.

Rescue the weak and the needy;

Deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”

Racism

I recently finished reading a historical, fictional series, based on events surrounding the American Civil War.  I began to realize that I was ignorant about the terrible events and treatment of the African American race.  My heart went out to the thousands of slaves who were considered to be as equal with the animals, too stupid to be considered worthy of considering.  Woman had their children taken and auctioned off on slave blocks, husbands and wives were ripped apart, black woman were sold into brothels, and several even raped by their white owners or commanded to reproduce with whomever their owner saw fit so as to increase a plantations slave population.  They were stacked in heaps beneath ships and branded like cattle.  Many who would try to escape, or who could not keep up with their expected work were beaten and even punished to death.  I suppose, I knew in part that these events happened, but I never considered the atrocity of it, or felt it as a real occurrence until reading these novels.  Amazingly, it has not been long since slavery was finally abolished through the whole country of the US in 1865.  And it is not as if the abolition of slavery ended racism.  It has indeed been a long, hard fight for African Americans to gain a widespread respect as equals. Why Is Sin Wrong and Harmful?

1.  We willingly sin against our knowledge of God.  (See whole chapter of Romans 1)

a)  We know that God exists, yet wanting to live our lives the way we want we push Him from our thoughts.

Romans 1:18-19 “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven (we can see the effects of sin, ex. Death) against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.  For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.” (more…)

(preface- i wrote this a few years back so I think I was using a version of New King James).

Matthew 12:15-21 “Jesus, aware of this, withdrew from there.  And many followed him, and he healed them all and ordered them not to make him known.  This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah:  “Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, with whom my soul is well pleased.  I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles.  He will not quarrel or cry aloud, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets; a bruised reed he will not break, and a smouldering wick he will not quench, until he brings justice to victory; and in his name the Gentiles will hope.” (more…)
